Last Swim in Their Last Home Meet

Our graduating seniors, including Sarah, swam their last event in their last home meet yesterday.
The bittersweet moments of parenthood, watching your child turn into a young adult, leaving the vestiges of childhood behind.
As the four of them move on in the years ahead, it is heartwarming, as a parent, to know that the friendships and the spirit of swim team will stay with them forever.
And of course, they will return each summer, for at least one meet, to cheer on their fellow sharks and catch up on shark news. Right guys?!?
GO SHARKS!

Jason

Little did we know that when we said goodbye last summer, that the good-bye would be so final. You will always be in our hearts, your quiet strength and gentle spirit guiding us. Rest in peace.

Independence Day

Happy July 4th!
Spent the morning helping to orchestrate our swim team July 4th breakfast. Everything was inhaled. Having a diverse community like we do, the assortment of foods is impressive- from potstickers to flan. And enough Krispy Kreme to satiate even my little ones.
Barbecue in the afternoon and fireworks tonight under the stars.
God Blesss America.

A Testament to Love

Twenty five years ago, today, John and I stood together in the hot sun, vowing to love and cherish each other forever .
We were in our early twenties and very much in love.
I wanted 12 children, but he married me anyway.
He never arrived anywhere on time, but I married him anyway- and yes, he was late to the wedding.
I can say with certainty that we both have learned so much in the last twenty five years. As friends around us have divorced, we have grown closer.
He shakes his head and smiles at my impulsivity.
I roll my eyes and grit my teeth about his patient pace.
We both embrace our imperfections and do not impose the burden of perfection on each other.
And we love each other more now than we thought possible twenty five years ago.
We have weathered our share of storms.
Miscarriages, illnesses, job concerns, etc.
We have reveled in more than our share of joys!
Our five children have been the center of our twenty five years.
They have taught us so much about life and love. They are amazing characters, each and every one. They never miss an oppotunity to challenge our parenting skills and help us learn from the experience. Their individual personalities are a wonder to behold.
We can not imagine our lives without them.
Twenty five years ago, I could not comprehend the depth of the love I could hold for our children. That love still takes my breath away.
So, today, John and I will get up at 5 am, drive four children to swim practice and back, two of them to work and back, walk the dogs, go to work ourselves, tour a private school for the twins, grocery shop, thank the sky for shining sun on us instead of dropping another 13" of rain, finish cleaning the basement from the last 13" of rain that found its way under our BRAND NEW carpeting, fix the cracked minivan windshield, watch the kids' swim meet and finally, take some time to relax together at a well-deserved quiet dinner with just the two of us - reminiscing over the past twenty five and dreaming of what is to come.

Happy Anniversary John! I love you!

Casey River

Took a 5 hour break last night from building the ark so that I could wet vac 36 gallons of water from the newly formed Casey River in our basement. More heavy rain this morning. At least I am getting good use from those L.L. Bean knee high boots I bought 15 years ago.

Thank heavens for perrenials

Perennials are my kind of plants. All I do is cut them back in the fall and each spring/summer they appear with their beautiful color!

Garden Fun

Well, the fruits of our labor are beginning to appear. And the deer and bunnies haven't even figured out how to circumvent our fencing yet!
Here we have our first little tomatoes and yellow peppers ( they will turn yellow as they ripen).

Wedding Weekend

We spent a whirlwind wedding weekend in Connecticut as my sister, Sue married Charlie this weekend.
The weekend started with a party for the out of town guests, hosted by my parents at their house.
Here are Mom, Sue (the bride to be), cousin Sue, and my girls-Sarah and Madeline.

got to love these adorable guys. i organized a boycott of the lunchroom because of the poor treatment of our cafeteria manager and her subsequent resignation. and these cute 2nd graders made signs for the boycott. only 10/538 kids bought lunch. hopefully, we will convince the school system that mrs. y. is an integral part of our community and they will work for her return as well.

several years ago the older boys established a traditional horseradish eating contest at passover. the goal is to see who can take the requisite large quantity on a piece of matzoh, eat and swallow and come out unscathed. eric prepares the horseradish from scratch and it can be quite potent. will and bob are, at least in this arena, the over achievers. sarah tries to keep up, but as can be seen, still needs a bit of practice.

tom, mike, samuel and marianna went exploring in the back yards yesterday and went to a favorite place, bamboo woods. they discovered a storm had blown over lots of bamboo stalks, so they decided to put them to good use and created a rainforest out of the swing set, complete with beanie baby inhabitants. they were busy ALL day with this whole set-up- making me a happy mom!

it has been a month since i last posted- must be the full time job i started.
but this beautiful snowy morning has slowed everything down and i have a few minutes to take pictures and post them.
12" of wonderful snow!
the boys were up at 6 am,, excited and ready to sled. i convinced them to watch the deer chomping on my azaleas and that bought us about 20 minutes of sleep.
the girls (sarah is home from college for the weekend- seems the partying is getting out of hand- even for her) probably won't wake up until after the snow melts. the joys of teenage daughters.
